PUBLISHING AND DISTRIBUTION

Amazon KDP vs. IngramSpark: Do You Need One or Both?

KDP gives a book direct access to Amazon. IngramSpark supports wider wholesale distribution. The publishing decision is how those systems should work together.

By Signature Manuscripts  |  The Library

Amazon KDP and IngramSpark are not competing versions of a publisher. They are platforms built for different parts of the publication and distribution process. A book may use one, the other, or both. The correct configuration depends on its formats, audience, sales channels, publishing identity, and the responsibility the author is prepared to carry after setup.

THE DISTINCTION

A platform can make a book available. It cannot decide whether the publication is ready, correctly positioned, or commercially configured.

When KDP alone can be enough

For an intentionally Amazon-first title, KDP may be the complete platform plan. It creates the product page, supports print on demand, processes orders, and reports royalties through the account. The author or publisher still supplies the files, metadata, rights, territories, pricing, edition details, accessibility information, and ISBN choice.

KDP also offers Expanded Distribution for eligible paperbacks. That option can extend availability beyond Amazon, but it is not the same as a coordinated IngramSpark strategy and should not be enabled for an ISBN being distributed through another service.

When IngramSpark becomes relevant

IngramSpark is commonly used when broader wholesale ordering matters. It places titles into Ingram’s network, which is used by retailers, libraries, and online stores. Availability does not guarantee shelf placement or purchase. The title must still be professionally presented, priced appropriately, and supported by demand.

The publisher must choose wholesale discount, return status, market pricing, territories, publication date, trim, paper, binding, color, metadata, and files for each edition. These settings affect who can order the book, what the publisher earns, and what financial exposure the publisher accepts.

Why many professional print strategies use both

KDP can serve direct Amazon fulfillment while IngramSpark supports broader wholesale ordering. The word “coordinated” matters. The ISBN, imprint, title, subtitle, author name, binding, trim, publication date, description, pricing architecture, and shared metadata must identify the same edition consistently across both systems.

Using both is not difficult because there are two upload screens. It is difficult because there is one book and two systems that must agree about what it is.

The decisions that create real risk

01 ISBN and imprint

A free platform ISBN is restricted to that platform and carries the platform’s designated publisher display. A properly controlled ISBN allows an eligible print edition to move across systems under one deliberate imprint. This decision should be made before the files are uploaded.

02 Pricing and wholesale terms

A price that works for a direct Amazon sale may leave little room after print cost and a wholesale discount. The publisher must balance category expectations, retailer economics, and the compensation the book is expected to earn.

03 Returns

Returnability can make a title easier for some retailers to consider, but it creates financial exposure. Returned copies may be charged back according to the selected terms. Choosing “returnable” because it sounds more professional is not a strategy.

04 Metadata and edition matching

Small inconsistencies in the title, subtitle, author name, imprint, ISBN, publication date, binding, language, or description can delay edition linking and create conflicting retailer records. Metadata is both technical and editorial.

05 Rights and ebook exclusivity

KDP Select applies to the Kindle ebook and requires Amazon exclusivity during the enrollment term. The print book can still be distributed elsewhere. Ebook and print strategies should therefore be considered separately rather than selected reflexively during setup.

The right choice is not automatically “both platforms.” It is the distribution architecture that serves the book, with a clear decision about who will manage the consequences after the accounts are created.

Common questions

Can I use KDP and IngramSpark at the same time?

Yes, especially for print editions, when the publisher controls the ISBN and the title is configured consistently. Do not enroll the same ISBN in KDP Expanded Distribution when IngramSpark is distributing it.

Will IngramSpark put my book into bookstores?

It can make the title available for bookstores and libraries to order through Ingram’s network. Availability does not guarantee stocking, display, or purchase.

Can I use a free KDP ISBN on IngramSpark?

No. KDP’s free ISBN is restricted to KDP. A print edition intended for both systems generally needs an ISBN the publisher controls.

Which Signature Manuscripts edition manages both platforms?

Signature Launch configures the publication across Amazon and expanded retail distribution, then hands the title back to the author. Signature Concierge actively manages KDP and IngramSpark through launch.
